Camping in the modern age is a strange mix of the natural and the technological; We as humans create and use technology to facilitate a return to nature, existing in a liminal space between escape and dependency, the untouched and the constructed. There is a tension between our pride in our technological achievements in the face of nature, and a sense of loss for the environment we are now hoping to recapture.

Through personal writing, photography, and illustration, every summer explores this contrast between nature and technology, seeking to capture the peacefulness of a return to nature, while also facing the reality that we will always be separate from it.

I compiled aesthetic references with a focus on minimal text, monochromatic colour schemes, and hand-drawn elements.

I compiled aesthetic references with a focus on minimal text, monochromatic colour schemes, and hand-drawn elements.

I collected my own photos to get a sense of colour palette and objects of focus. Our yellow kayaks ended up becoming the basis for the use of yellow as a key colour.

I explored various image treatments, illustration styles, and colour schemes. I also thought about how best to balance text and image to create areas of rest within the narrative.
